Subway drive-thrus exist, but they are the exception rather than the rule. The chain grew by putting small stores into strip malls, gas stations and host sites where a drive lane was never possible — so a drive-thru is a feature of newer freestanding builds and remodels, not something you can assume.
How common are they?
Only a small minority of the roughly 20,000 US locations have one. Freestanding suburban and highway-corridor stores are the likeliest candidates; in-line strip mall units and non-traditional locations inside universities, hospitals, airports and truck stops essentially never do. How to find a Subway drive-thru near you
- Filter the official store locator. Subway's own finder lists store amenities, including drive-thru, on each result.
- Search maps for "Subway drive thru" — Google and Apple Maps both surface a drive-through attribute on the place card, and reviews will tell you if it is real.
- Check the app store page. The Subway app shows amenities and, more usefully, whether a store offers curbside.
- Look for freestanding buildings on a main road. If it shares a wall with a nail salon, there is no lane.
- Confirm the hours. Some stores run the lane on a shorter schedule than the dining room — see Subway hours.
What the window can and can't handle
A Subway drive-thru is not a burger drive-thru. Every sandwich is built to order by hand on a line designed for a customer standing in front of it, so throughput is much lower. In practice:
- Fine: one or two subs with standard builds, drinks, chips and cookies.
- Slow: heavily customised orders, toasted builds, anything with a long topping list.
- Don't: catering platters and Giant Subs — those are pre-order collections, not window items.
Because the crew cannot show you the sandwich as it is assembled, drive-thru orders are the most likely to come out wrong. Say the full build in one clear sequence — bread, protein, cheese, toasted or not, vegetables, sauce — and repeat the sauce at the end.
Why mobile order pickup usually beats it
If your store has a drive-thru it almost certainly takes app orders too, and the app sends your exact build to the line before you arrive. That removes the two slowest parts of the lane — speaking the order and paying — and it applies your MVP Rewards points and any coupon codes, which the window often cannot.
