Subway does not run one national timetable. Because almost every US restaurant is owned by an independent franchisee, the person who signs the lease also sets the hours — which is why the store by your office opens at 7am on weekdays and stays shut on Sunday, while the one on the highway is still slicing bread at midnight. Still, after checking hundreds of listings across the country, the patterns are consistent enough to plan around.

The short answer

Most US Subway restaurants open between 7:00am and 9:00am and close between 9:00pm and 10:00pm, seven days a week. Sunday is the most commonly shortened day: expect a later open (often 9:00–10:00am) and an earlier close (frequently 8:00pm).

Breakfast hours

Where breakfast is served, it usually runs from opening until 10:30 or 11:00am. The important caveat is that breakfast is optional for franchisees, so plenty of stores never serve it at all. We cover which locations do, and the trick for getting an egg sandwich in the afternoon, in our Subway breakfast menu guide.

Late-night and 24-hour Subways

True 24-hour Subways exist but are rare, and they are nearly always attached to truck stops or travel plazas on interstate corridors. A more realistic late-night plan is to order ahead in the app before the posted close time. Kitchens stop accepting new orders at closing, not after, and many stores stop toasting 10–15 minutes early while they break down the oven.

Holiday hours

  • Thanksgiving and Christmas Day: most locations close entirely; airport and travel-plaza stores are the usual exceptions.
  • Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve: commonly close early, often 4:00–6:00pm.
  • New Year's Day: late open, typically 10:00 or 11:00am.
  • Easter, July 4th, Labor Day and Memorial Day: usually open on reduced hours.

How to check your store in ten seconds

  1. Open the Subway app or the restaurant locator on subway.com and search your ZIP code — the hours shown there are what the franchisee reports.
  2. Cross-check the Google Business listing. If the two disagree, the app is usually the more current of the two.
  3. If you are cutting it close, phone the store. Staffing gaps mean a store can close early without either listing changing.

Timing your visit for a better sandwich

Bread is baked in batches through the day, so the freshest loaves come out mid-morning and again in the late afternoon before the dinner rush. The busiest window is 11:45am to 1:15pm; arrive at 11:15 or after 1:30 and you will usually get a shorter queue, a more patient sandwich artist and fully stocked vegetables. Late in the evening, expect a thinner selection of breads and cookies.
