The Subway kids meal — often called the Fresh Fit for Kids meal — is one of the better fast-food options for children, mostly because there is no fryer involved and you control every ingredient. It is also the least advertised part of the menu, so plenty of parents order a 6-inch and a bag of chips without realising a cheaper, better-balanced bundle exists.
What's in a Subway kids meal
The standard bundle is a 4-inch mini sub, a side and a small drink, typically priced at $5.49 to $7.99 depending on location. Sides usually include apple slices, a yoghurt, a bag of baked chips or a cookie; drinks are usually low-fat milk, juice, water or a small fountain drink. Some stores hand out a toy or activity sheet, but that has never been consistent nationally.
Which sandwich to pick
| Mini sub | Approx. calories | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Black Forest Ham | ~180 cal | The safest bet for most children |
| Turkey Breast | ~180 cal | Leanest option, mild flavour |
| Veggie Delite | ~130 cal | Cheapest; add cheese for staying power |
| Roast Beef (where stocked) | ~200 cal | Good protein, slightly stronger taste |
| Meatball Marinara | ~250 cal | Most popular with kids, messiest by far |
| Cheese sub (cheese and veg only) | ~170 cal | Ask for it — not on the board but always possible |
Calories are for a plain mini sub on white or wheat with cheese and light vegetables — add 30–100 for sauces. A complete kids meal generally lands between 300 and 500 calories, which is a sensible lunch for most primary-school-aged children.
Five things that make the order go smoothly
- Order untoasted for young children. Toasted bread is hot in the middle for longer than it looks, and crustier bread is harder for small mouths.
- Ask for it cut in half. Two 2-inch pieces get eaten; one 4-inch sub often does not.
- Choose the softest bread. White Italian or a wrap beats Hearty Multigrain for fussy eaters — see our bread guide.
- Keep sauces separate. A pot of mayonnaise or honey mustard on the side prevents the "I don't like the wet bit" negotiation.
- Order in the app on the way there. Fewer minutes of queueing with a hungry child, and the spend still earns MVP Rewards points.
Making it genuinely balanced
The two swaps that matter most: choose apple slices over the cookie and milk or water over the fountain drink. That combination alone removes roughly 200 calories and most of the added sugar from the meal. Then add vegetables even if they get picked out — cucumber, lettuce and tomato are free, and children eat more of them than parents expect when they choose them at the glass themselves.
Allergies and picky eaters
A plain cheese-and-vegetable mini sub is always orderable even when it is not on the board, and it solves most picky-eater standoffs. If your child has an allergy, read our allergen guide first — the glove and knife request matters more than the ingredient list.
Kids meal availability, sides, drink choices and prices are set by individual franchisees. Calorie figures are approximate — confirm current values in the Subway app.
