Subway is quietly one of the best fast-food options for a low-carb day, for one reason: the bread is optional and the meat, cheese and vegetables are portioned in front of you. A Footlong's worth of filling in a bowl, dressed with mayonnaise or ranch, is a genuinely satisfying keto meal for around ten dollars. The traps are the sauces, the corn, and — less obviously — the crispy onions.
Start with the No Bready Bowl
The No Bready Bowl is any sub built into a bowl instead of bread, with the same filling quantity as a Footlong. Base carbs come only from the vegetables you choose, so a steak-and-cheese bowl with leafy greens, cucumber, olives and mayo lands around 6–9g net carbs with 40g+ of protein. Chopped salads are a slightly smaller version of the same idea at a lower price.
Best keto proteins at Subway
- Steak — highest protein, essentially zero carbs, the strongest choice.
- Rotisserie-style chicken and grilled chicken — clean, 0–1g carbs.
- Bacon, ham, salami, pepperoni, turkey — all fine; deli meats carry a gram or two at most.
- Tuna — mayo-based, so high fat and near-zero carbs. Excellent keto value.
- Meatballs and teriyaki chicken — avoid. The marinara and the glaze both carry significant sugar.
Vegetables: green light and red light
Load up on: spinach, lettuce, cucumber, green pepper, banana peppers, jalapeños, black olives, pickles and tomato in moderation. Go easy on: red onion (sweeter than it looks) and tomato in quantity. Skip: sweet corn, and the crispy onion topping — a breaded crunch that adds 6–8g of carbs to an otherwise clean bowl. Avocado is an ideal keto add, at around 2g net carbs for the fat and satiety it brings.

Three orders under 10g net carbs
- Steak & Cheese bowl (~8g net). Double steak, provolone, spinach, green pepper, jalapeños, black olives, mayo, oregano, black pepper. Around 45g protein.
- Tuna bowl (~5g net). Tuna, extra cheese, lettuce, cucumber, pickles, banana peppers, red wine vinegar, salt and pepper. The cheapest keto option on this page.
- Club chopped salad (~7g net). Turkey, ham, bacon, Swiss, greens, olives, ranch, avocado. Closest thing to a proper restaurant salad at Subway prices.
What about the wraps and low-carb bread?
Subway's standard tortilla wrap is not low carb — it typically carries 35–40g of carbohydrate on its own, more than two slices of most breads. The US menu does not currently offer a keto bread, so the bowl and the salad remain the only genuinely low-carb vehicles. We compare all three formats in our wraps, bowls and salads guide.
Ordering it smoothly
Say "a No Bready Bowl, [protein], with…" at the start rather than mid-build — bowls are assembled differently to sandwiches and it saves everyone a restart. In the app, choose the sub you want and switch the bread selection to No Bready Bowl. Double meat is usually cheaper here per gram of protein than anywhere else on the price list.
