The Italian B.M.T. is Subway's best-known sandwich and, for a lot of long-time customers, the default order. It is also the sub that best shows what changed when Subway moved to freshly sliced deli meats: the same three meats, noticeably better texture.
What B.M.T. stands for
Officially, "Biggest, Meatiest, Tastiest." The name is a nod to the Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit line from Subway's early New York-adjacent branding, but the meaning printed on Subway's own materials is the alliterative one. Either way, the contents are consistent nationwide: Genoa salami, pepperoni and Black Forest ham.
Calories, sodium and price
| Build | Calories | Sodium | Typical price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6-inch, Italian bread, provolone, standard veg | ~390–430 | ~1,200–1,400 mg | $6.79 – $9.79 |
| Footlong, same build | ~780–860 | ~2,400–2,800 mg | $10.49 – $14.49 |
| B.M.T. wrap on lavash | ~640–700 | ~2,000 mg | $11.49 – $15.99 |
| B.M.T. No Bready Bowl | ~380–430 | ~1,700 mg | $12.49 – $16.99 |
The calorie count is mid-range — it is the sodium that deserves attention. Three cured meats plus cheese puts a Footlong at or above a full day's recommended sodium intake for most adults. If you eat B.M.T. regularly, the 6-inch with double vegetables is the sensible default, and skipping added salt and olives helps more than changing the bread.
How to build it properly
- Italian Herb & Cheese bread, toasted. This is the one sandwich where the herb bread earns its place — the oregano echoes the salami.
- Provolone, not American. Sharper, and it holds up to cured meat.
- Lettuce, tomato, red onion, green pepper. Onion is not optional here; it cuts the fat.
- Banana peppers and a little oil and vinegar. The classic Italian deli finish. Skip mayonnaise — you already have plenty of fat.
- Oregano and black pepper. Free, and it is what most people are missing when they say their B.M.T. tasted flat.
B.M.T. versus the Subway Series alternatives
Three numbered subs overlap with it. #4 Supreme Meats is essentially a B.M.T. with capicola and salami layered heavier — more meat, a few dollars more. #3 The Monster goes further with pepperoni, capicola and double meat. #6 The Boss swaps into meatballs and pepperoni entirely. If you like the B.M.T. and want an upgrade rather than a different sandwich, Supreme Meats is the direct step up — the full breakdown is in our Subway Series guide.
Value notes
The B.M.T. appears in most markets' Sub of the Day rotation as the Spicy Italian's sibling, and it is frequently included in app-only BOGO and Footlong promotions. Ordering it in the app rather than at the counter also earns MVP Rewards points on the full pre-discount total at most locations.
Nutrition and prices are approximate 2026 US figures and vary by franchise. Confirm in the Subway app before ordering.
