Subway is one of the easier fast-food chains to eat at without meat, because the entire model is built on you choosing what goes on the bread. What trips people up is the detail: a few breads, several sauces and most of the cheese make an otherwise plant-based sub non-vegan, and the answer changes depending on which country you are standing in. Everything below applies to the United States menu in 2026.
The headline vegetarian order
The Veggie Delite is the classic: bread, cheese if you want it, and the full free-vegetable lineup. It is also the cheapest sub on the board, typically $5.99–$8.49 for a 6-inch. The Veggie Patty is offered at a minority of US locations and is vegetarian but not vegan (it contains egg and dairy), so call ahead if that is the reason for your visit.
Breads: what to choose and what to skip
- Generally fine: Italian (white), Hearty Multigrain, Artisan Italian and the standard flour tortilla wraps.
- Not vegan: Italian Herbs & Cheese and Parmesan Oregano (cheese topping), and Cheesy Garlic bread. Flatbread formulations vary by supplier.
- Ask about honey: Honey Oat contains honey, which rules it out for strict vegans.

Three builds that eat like a real meal
- The Mediterranean. Footlong Hearty Multigrain, no cheese, double spinach, tomato, cucumber, red onion, black olives, banana peppers, oil and red wine vinegar, heavy oregano and black pepper. Ask for it untoasted so the vegetables stay crisp.
- The Sweet Onion Crunch. Toasted Italian with provolone, lettuce, tomato, green pepper, red onion, pickles and jalapeños, Sweet Onion sauce, extra crunch from double pickles. The sweet-heat combination is what makes a meat-free sub feel finished.
- The loaded bowl. A No Bready Bowl with double spinach, avocado, every vegetable on the bar and vinaigrette — the most food you can get at Subway without meat. Details and carb counts are in our wraps and bowls comparison.
Getting more protein without meat
A plain veggie sub is light on protein — around 8–9g in a 6-inch. Add cheese (about 4–5g), double it, or add avocado for fat and satiety rather than protein. If you are vegetarian rather than vegan, an egg patty from the breakfast menu adds roughly 6–7g and many stores will add it to a lunch sub if the flat-top is still on.
Cross-contact, honestly
Subway builds every sandwich on a shared line, with shared gloves, shared knives and shared toaster racks. Staff will change gloves and use a clean knife if you ask, and it is worth asking, but Subway cannot guarantee a sandwich has had no contact with meat. If that matters to you for religious or medical reasons rather than dietary preference, factor it in.
Ingredient formulations change and vary by supplier and region. Check the current allergen and ingredient information in the Subway app or in store if a specific ingredient matters to you.
